In traditional astrology, there’s a technique called “sect” that assigns each person a day or night chart. Depending on what time you were born, there will be planets that are more positive or more challenging for you.
According to sect, you have a day or a night chart; you have a day chart if you were born when it was light outside, during daytime. You have a night chart if you were born when it was dark outside, during nighttime. You can check if you have a day or night chart by locating your Sun in the natal chart. If your Sun is ABOVE your ascendant/descendant axis, you have a day chart. If your Sun is BELOW your ascendant/descendant axis, you have a night chart.
Generally in astrology, Venus and Jupiter are the benefic, or beneficial planets. Mars and Saturn are the malefics or the challenging planets. Sect assigns a greater benefic and malefic to your chart, depending on if it’s a day or night chart.
DAY CHART
When you have a day chart, Jupiter is your greater benefic and Mars is your greater malefic. Jupiter is “boosted” and is more favorable in a day chart, while Mars has the opportunity to cause more annoyances in a day chart. Although Jupiter and Mars may have more of an impact on a day chart, Venus is still beneficial and Saturn can still be challenging. Based on sect, Venus and Saturn don’t have the power that Jupiter and Mars do in a day chart.
If you have a day chart, the house that Mars is placed in might experience more challenges than the house Saturn is in, solely based on the fact that you have a day chart. Mars can cause more annoyance to someone with a day chart, while Saturn has the opportunity to be more constructive. The house Jupiter is placed in can experience more “luck” or be experienced with more ease with a day chart. The house Venus is placed in can still experience harmony, but Jupiter is more impactful on someone with a day chart. This extends into transits as well - Jupiter transits can be more beneficial for day charts while Mars transits can be more challenging.
NIGHT CHART
When you have a night chart, Venus is your greater benefic and Saturn is your greater malefic. Venus is “boosted” and is more favorable in a night chart, while Saturn has the opportunity to cause more challenges in a night chart. Although Venus and Saturn may have more of an impact on a night chart, Jupiter is still beneficial and Mars can still be challenging. According to sect, Jupiter and Mars just don’t have the power that Venus and Saturn do in a night chart.
If you have a night chart, the house that Saturn is placed in can experience more obstacles than the house Mars is in, solely based on the fact that you have a night chart. Saturn transits can cause more challenges to someone with a night chart, while Mars has the opportunity to be more constructive (but still annoying lol). The house that Venus is placed in can experience more harmony in a night chart. The house Jupiter is placed in can still experience the benefits of Jupiter, but Venus has more impact on someone with a night chart. This can manifest in transits as well - Venus transits can be more beneficial for night charts while Saturn transits can be more challenging.
What if my Sun is close to my Ascendant/Descendant?
If your Sun is close to your ascendant/descendant axis, about 6° above or below, you may have to investigate whether your chart “acts” like a day or a night chart. There are a few ways you can do this:
Check the house placement of both Saturn and Mars. Reflect on whether you struggle with Saturn or Mars house topics more.
Check the house placement of both Jupiter and Venus. Reflect on whether you have an easier time with Jupiter or Venus house topics.
Track the transits of the malefics and benefics. If Mars transits/aspects seem more challenging than Saturn, this suggests you might have a day chart. And vice versa, if Saturn transits/aspects seem more challenging than Mars, this may indicate that you have a night chart.
The condition (sign) that your benefic or malefic are in and their aspects will impact how problematic or positive the planets are. For example, if you have a day chart and Mars is your greater malefic, but it is in its exaltation in Capricorn, Mars won’t be as problematic; Mars is in a sign that supports its goals.
Sect is just another way to break down the natal chart/planets and receive more meaning from them. You can get more insight into where someone has an easier or more challenging time in life. For example, if someone has a day chart and has Mars in the 7th house, they could have more challenges when it comes to their one-on-one relationships. If someone has a night chart and has Venus in the 3rd house, they could have a harmonious relationship with their siblings.
On my Patreon, there is a list of manifestations of having your greater malefic or benefic through the houses.
